What is this course about?

The course is developed and endorsed by Via Afrika. One of the greatest challenges that parents face when their children struggle with Mathematics, is their own fear of Mathematics. Due to negative experiences at school, parents are unsure whether they have the ability to support their own children in learning Mathematics. Parents can also, unwittingly, pass on their own fear of Mathematics to their children. The result can easily be a family in crisis when the Mathematics textbook is taken out of the schoolbag. In this course, you will learn how to move beyond your own fear to confidently support your child. This course provides you with the necessary guidance, tips and ideas so that you can help your child to become a successful and confident learner of Mathematics. In this course, you will also learn how to create an encouraging environment at home where your children can learn to love Mathematics and achieve success!

Who should be doing this course?

Every child has the ability to learn and succeed in Mathematics. This course is designed to support parents of children in Grades 7-9 so that they can confidently guide their children’s Mathematics learning at home. This course provides parents with the necessary guidance, tips and ideas that will help their children to become successful and confident learners of Mathematics.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Explore several ways of supporting children at home to become successful Maths learners.
  • Discuss ways to support children with Maths homework.
  • Engage with techniques that can help children prepare for Maths tests.
  • Discover strategies that parents can use to develop their children’s problem solving skills.
  • Engage with the fear of Mathematics and the symptoms of this fear.
  • Discuss why the fear of Maths develops and strategies to overcome this anxiety.
  • Understand the relevance of learning Mathematics and discuss different ways of finding help with difficult Mathematics problems.
  • Explain the benefits of studying Mathematics up to Matric and the different between Mathematical Literacy and Mathematics.
  • Understand the two major learning theories for Mathematics.
  • Understand the basic principles of how children learn Mathematics.
  • Explore the difference between a procedural and conceptual understanding of Maths.
  • Explore two kinds of thinking styles in Mathematics.
  • Understand the process of finding the properties of 2D shapes.
  • Engage with 3D objects to explain its properties.
  • Explore practical activities that parents can use to teach children about angles.
  • Explore the importance of knowing Geometry terminology.
  • Understand the meaning of perimeter and how to help your child with this concept.
  • Engage with the concept of area and how to guide your child to work with different formulas for area.
  • Discover the difference between area and surface area and how to guide your child through long surface area calculation processes.
  • Discuss the meanings of volume and capacity and how to help your child to calculate volume.
  • Explore the various causes for a lack of understanding in Maths.
  • Explore misconceptions children develop in Maths.
  • Develop realistic expectations of your child’s Maths teacher and understand what is expected of your child.
  • Discuss how to teach your child the basics of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

How is your course mark calculated? 

Your course mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the Chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 50%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course. Good Luck! 

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on a student guide where one 300 – 500 word article is read per day, and the assessment is done on a separate day after the relevant articles have been reviewed. But you can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!
