This course is designed to teach the basic skills of being a painter. The course will take learners through the basics principles and skills required to succeed in the painting and decorating industry.

  • Site clean-up and handover
  • Anyone who wants to get a job as a painter, or to improve their personal skills will benefit from this course.

This course will help anyone who wants to pursue a career in painting and decorating. The jobs targeted in this course is:

  • It is also suitable for an individual who would like to improve their general painting skills.

Learning outcomes

This course covers the following key learning outcomes:
Chapter 1 - What does a painter do?

  • Know and understand the how a painter fits into the building industry.o    Know and understand the various parts of a building
  • Know and understand the various materials in a building
  • Know and understand the tools used by a painter
  • Know and understand the the health and safety risks of a painter

Chapter 2 - Site Preparation

  • Know and understand the client brief
  • Know and understand the specific work areas
  • Know and understand how to secure the work areas
  • Know and understand how to protect existing surfaces and client property
  • Know and understand safety procedures for entire project

Chapter 3 - Surface preparation

  • Know and understand how to handle new, unpainted surfaces
  • Know and understand how to handle previously painted surfaces
  • Know and understand priorities in work-flow during surface preparation
  • Know and understand which painting products suit specific materials
  • Know and understand how to prepare, store, mix and protect materials during entire project.

Chapter 4 - Painting Procedures and Skills

  • Know and understand which painting tools to use for specific tasks
  • Know and understand how to use each individual tool
  • Know and understand which tool is best suited for specific materials and surfaces
  • Know and understand how to clean and store each tool
  • Know and understand the finer skills in applying paint

Chapter 5 - Operations and Productivity

  • Know and understand daily start-up and shut-down procedures
  • Know and understand the basics of planning and work flow
  • Know and understand the effect of weather on planning and procedures
  • Know and understand the basics of teamwork.
  • Know and understand the continuous focus on quality

Chapter 6 - Project Close Out

  • Know and understand how to recognise a quality product
  • Know and understand how snag project completely.
  • Know and understand how to de-snag effectively
  • Know and understand project finalisation and exit from site.
  • Know and understand how hand over completed project to client.

How is your course mark calculated?

Your course mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the Chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 50%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course. Good Luck!
 

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on a student guide where one 300 – 500 word article is read per day, and the assessment is done on a separate day after the relevant articles have been reviewed. But you can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!

Gregory Bouah resides in the Western Cape and has over 25 years’ working experience in the Building Industry including; Architecture, Project Management, Contracting and as Painting & Decorating Entrepreneur. He has worked on both sides of the industry being a consultant and as a contractor and therefore has a holistic understanding of quality and the skills required to attain it. He has worked with a wide range of clients from both high-end and low-end economic sectors. Gregory has a National Diploma in Architecture, and through his business pursuits has been involved in mentoring and developing skills within the Building industry since 2009.
