What this course is about?

This course is a must for anyone who wants to know how to help young children have the best possible start in life and reach their full potential.

Research has shown that the early childhood years are the most important years in a child’s development. What happens in a child’s early years will last a lifetime. Acting early is critical for the well-being and future of our children.

This course is designed to provide all those interested in Early Childhood Development (ECD) with an understanding of the concepts of ECD and with the basics on what they can do to help nurture and enrich the lives of young children and families.

The course will take learners through the basics of ECD and terminology used, important developmental milestones, the importance of play, and positive parenting.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Understand why the first few years of life are the most critical in a child’s development and terms used in Early Childhood Development
  • Understand why a healthy pregnancy is so important to a child’s development
  • Understand how a young child’s brain develops, the ages and stages of development, and the importance of child nutrition.
  • Understand the importance of Positive Parenting and the use of discipline
  • Understand the importance of play for a child and how to promote it
  • Understand children’s socio-emotional development


How is your course mark calculated?

Your course is mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the Chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 50%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course. Good Luck!

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on a student guide where one 300 – 500 word article is read per day, and the assessment is done on a separate day after the relevant articles have been reviewed. But you can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!

Dr Marc Aguirre


Dr Marc Aguirre is a medical doctor and holds a BSc Honours degree. He has over 20 years’ experience in clinical HIV/AIDS and Children’s programs. He is currently serving as Hope worldwide’s South Africa Country Director and Regional Technical Advisor for programs in 6 African countries. He worked in Cote d’Ivoire for 10 years with HOPE worldwide’s integrated HIV/AIDS clinical and community programs. The clinic which he directed was given ‘Best practice’ status by the Joint United Nations program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS). His partnership work in Community Mobilization was also awarded ‘Best Practice’ by UNAIDS. He has led the development of HOPE worldwide’s community-based Early Childhood Development (ECD) work which is being implemented in South Africa and in 3 other African countries. He has presented extensively a on a range of topics including HIV and ECD. He is a Steering Committee member of the Eastern and Southern Africa Regional Inter-Agency Task Team on Children Affected by AIDS (RIATT-ESA) which is a unique, multi-sectoral partnership focusing on the care and support of children affected by AIDS in eastern and southern Africa.
