An introduction to Human Resource Management

Human Resource Management (HRM) is the function in an organisation or school that focuses on the recruitment of, management of, and providing direction for the people who work in the organisation.  Some schools have their own HR departments.  Others rely on the HR available to them through the Department of Education.  Either way, it is important for members of school management teams to have a basic understanding of HR in order to run their schools and manage their staff effectively.

HRM deals with issues related to people e.g.

  • compensation
  • hiring
  • performance management
  • safety
  • wellness
  • benefits
  • employee motivation
  • communication
  • administration
  • and training

Effective HRM ensures that employees are able to contribute effectively and productively to the overall direction of the school or organisation and the accomplishment of the organisation's goals and objectives.  To do this, HRM departments or principals or members of the SMT need to establish the training requirements for their organisations.  How do they do this?
