What this course is about

 

This course on Leadership and Management prepares new school leaders for leadership and management roles.  The course will give teachers an insight into the role of leadership within the school context, and help them to learn the skills and knowledge they need to add value to their new roles.  The course explains the concept of leadership as well as analyses and compares leadership theories. Teachers will learn how to apply the different roles and qualities of leadership in the workplace and analyse their own leadership styles and build on them.

The section on management differentiates between leadership and management and describes the management activities involved in running a school.  It also explains the basic activities involved in the management process and the main tasks required of managers. 

New school leaders and managers from all phases will benefit from this course.  

This course will be useful to school leaders and aspiring school leaders.  It will enable them to gain insight into the role of leadership within a work context, and thus provide them with the skills and knowledge to add value to their jobs.  This course will also provide value to members of School Management Boards and District Officers.

All school leaders and aspiring school leaders who want to develop leadership and management skills. 

 

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • Gain insight into the role of leadership within a work context, and thus

    • Learn skills and knowledge to add value to your job

    • Explain the concept of leadership

    • Analyse and compare leadership theories

    • Apply the different roles and qualities of leadership in a work context

    • Learn the different definitions of leadership

  • Differentiate between leadership and management

    • Describe the management activities involved in running a successful business 

    • Explain the basic activities involved in the management process 

    • Identify and explain the main tasks required of managers 

    • Apply the decision making process to make a management decision 

    • Analyse the application of the general management functions in a selected unit

    • Learn and apply leadership and management skills

  • Learn about the other management roles of trust, communication etc.

 

How your final mark is calculated?

Your course is mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the Chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 70%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course. Good Luck!

 

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on chapters and video clips to watch. Short multiple choice questions after chapters test understanding and possible application of knowledge. You can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!

Cathy Fry has over 30 years of teaching and training experience in South Africa. She was principal two top independent junior girls’ schools in Johannesburg. Cathy’s expertise lies in ECD and primary education as well as whole school improvement and curriculum development. Cathy has been involved in teacher development and bursary programmes for disadvantaged children throughout her career in independent schools. She was a long standing member of the ISASA (Independent Schools Association of South Africa) Curriculum Development Programme as well as a member of the SAHISA (Southern African Heads of Independent Schools Association) Council, representing junior schools throughout South Africa. Cathy is highly qualified with a B.Ed from London University in 1977, a Diploma in Remedial Education from UNISA, a Masters in Philosophy, Second Language Acquisition, from Stellenbosch and a Master’s in Education from the University of the Witwatersrand in 2012. Cathy has also attended the Leadership Development Programme at the Wits Business School and is a registered assessor and moderator with the Service and ETDP SETAS. In 2012 she completed a Foundations in Coaching Course, online, from GET Smarter. After setting up her own company, Ukhanyiso Ebantwini, in 2012 Cathy has worked in both independent and state schools running a series of teacher development workshops. Her company is a service provider for SACE and has several SETA accredited qualifications. Cathy has developed online teacher training materials in 21st Century teaching and learning, study skills and leadership and management. She has worked with NPOs in Diepsloot, Tembisa, Modimolle and Johannesburg facilitating school leadership and management workshops, coaching and mentoring School Management Teams and running accredited ECD teacher development. She is an accredited facilitator for the British Council and has been put forward for validation as a Master Trainer. Cathy also works for Umalusi doing desk top evaluations for independent schools and she is a level 1 trainer in Philosophy for Children (P4C) in South Africa. Cathy’s passion for education, self-motivation and drive have been at the forefront of her success in independent schools and in the development of her own company.
