What this course is about?

‘Creative’ individuals may ask themselves whether they are able to channel their ‘creativity’ into a career. “Is it possible to make a living from being ‘arty’?”. I think this is a very valid question, and one that is more than likely going to be asked by the parents of these creatively-inclined ‘career-hopefuls’. The answer is ‘yes’…most certainly. In fact there are many career paths available to ‘creatively-inclined’ students namely; Graphic Design, Interior Design, Photography, Fine-Art, Textile Design, Fashion Design and the list goes on.

Something very important to note is that creativity is unique, because when its outcomes are successful, they generally stemmed from the unquantifiable and immeasurable intuition, perception and subjective insight of some talented ‘creative’ professional. Over the years I have come to realize that this is a skill which can be channeled into a lucrative career. It is a skill that is respected by the industry as well as the clients being serviced by creative agencies.

The creative career direction we will be focusing on in this course is Graphic Design. This is the career path that I decided to take as a youngster who was acutely aware that my natural talent lay in the realm of the ‘creative’.

Who should be doing this course?

This course is aimed at creatively inclined Grade 10-12 students as well as those who have finished school and have not decided on a career path as of yet or are reconsidering their career path. It will introduce them to Graphic Design as a possible career choice.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  • To understand why graphic design is a great career choice.
  • To understand what qualifications are necessary to become a graphic designer.
  • To gain some insight into where graphic designers work, and what income they typically generate.

How is your course mark calculated?

Your course is mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the Chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 50%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course. Good Luck!

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on a student guide where one 300 – 500 word article is read per day, and the assessment is done on a separate day after the relevant articles have been reviewed. But you can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!

In the 6 chapters of this course you'll be covering the following areas:

CHAPTER 1 Why Graphic Design is a great career choice
CHAPTER 2 Where should I study and do I even need a ‘formal’ qualification?
CHAPTER 3 Where will I work?
CHAPTER 4 Show me the Money
CHAPTER 5 What is the industry standard technology?
CHAPTER 6 Do designers have a shelf life?
