What is this course is about?

This course is designed to teach some of the basic principles surrounding HIV and AIDS. Although HIV and AIDS have been around for over forty (40) years, there is still a lot of speculation, misconception, misinformation, lack of knowledge and stigma surrounding the condition. The course will take learners through the basics of HIV and AIDS. It is intended for personal and educational purposes. The course will also allay some myths and misconceptions surrounding HIV and AIDS.

Who should be doing this course?

It is a must for anyone who wants to get better knowledge on HIV and AIDS and may equip the following parties: 
•    Anyone who just tested for HIV, 
•    a student who is assigned to conduct a school project on HIV and AIDS, 
•    Workplace and Community presentations 
•    Individuals who want to assist someone who is HIV positive to understand the disease. 
•    It may also benefit HIV positive people who want to disclose their HIV positive status to their partners, families and communities. 
•    Parents/Guardians who have to give answers to their children in relation to HIV and AIDS.

Learning outcomes

After completing this course, you should be able to:
•    Understand the basic concepts and foundations of HIV and AIDS
•    Identify modes of transmission for HIV infection 
•    Review the types of tests used for HIV testing
•    Understand the importance of taking HIV medication(ARV/ART) as well as the type of HIV medication available
•    Apply a healthy lifestyle whether you test HIV positive or not
•    Understand how to create a positive lifestyle plan
•    Identify support methods and support structures if tested HIV positive
•    Understand how to create a positive lifestyle plan

How is your course mark calculated?

Your course mark is calculated using the average mark obtained in each of the chapter tests. In order to pass this course, you must obtain a final course mark of at least 50%. This means that even if you fail a few of the chapter tests, if your test marks in the other chapter tests are high enough you will still be able to pass the course.

Study at your own pace!

We’ve created our courses to suit your busy life! The duration of this course is based on a student guide where one 300 – 500 word article is read per day, and the assessment is done on a separate day after the relevant articles have been reviewed. However, you can do the course in your own time and at your own pace. If you choose to do two readings per day, it will take you half of the estimated time, four readings per day means doing the course in a quarter of the time etc. We leave that decision up to you!

Anne Lebethe Mabena


Anne Lebethe Mabena is the current HIV and AIDS coordinator for the South African Police Service (SAPS) since 2009. She has a BA Degree from UNISA. Anne is a co-founder of the Openly Positive Trust, an empowerment initiative for people living with HIV and AIDS to write and document their journeys of living with HIV through publications (print and electronic) and social media. Anne is a mentor, coach and a public speaker. She has written a memoir “Vida - A taste to life”, in the Openly Positive publication of “Whisper Not”. Anne has been openly living with HIV for twenty one (21) years. She lives in Cape Town.
